More on the wooden snowflakes

Selasa, 07 Juni 2016

I wanted to answer a few questions about the snowflakes. The most common question was is how to slice them up if you dont have a band saw. In this mere Minutes video I suggest using a handsaw which I think would work pretty well. If you have a scroll way, I think that is another option, assuming its wide enough. If you have any other idea, post them in the comments section.

Snowflakes calendars and cannons

Michael Adle confirms that wooden snowflakes are fun to make and that he has lots of sanding to do. He has certainly created a stockpile:

Calenders make great gifts, too. Here is a really cool idea from Yorch Buenfil in Mexico. A perpetual calendar made from laminated mdf, pine and styrene with vynyl decals. I really like this project and may make one myself.

Curiouser and curiouser: heres a "Beer Cannon" from John in Hadley. He says it also doubles as a wine bottle holder for "lesser mortals".

Finally, it always feels like Christmas around here when I hear this song on the radio! (No picture on this video.)

Still trying to think of gifts you can make for Christmas? Dont worry, there is still plenty of time. Well, three weekends.
Heres a fun way to crank out bazillions of wood snowflakes and give them away as ornaments. Its a great way to create custom gifts for a large number of people, say your co-workers.

Wood snowflakes

Minggu, 07 Februari 2016

Got a package of wooden snowflakes from Duane Kriebel at Spheramid Woodworks a couple weeks ago. At first I thought they were made using a scroll saw. And they looked like a lot of work.
Instead, they are quite simple to make. Its just a matter of creating a "snowflake log" and slicing it up into bunches of individual flakes. Each set you make will be unique; they remind me of those paper snowflakes you can make by folding and cutting paper.
Duane has been making and selling these for many years and has worked out quite an efficient system  for production. In fact, to save time he has several table saws and routers so he can quickly move from one set-up to the next! Here are some pictures of his operation.
